How to Remove a Grass Stain
School is back in session, football is back on TV, and our kids are busy getting dirty now that fall sports have started. As amazing as daily activity and exercise is for their health, it can leave them coming home with grass stains on every article of clothing they own. Depending on how quickly you can throw the dirty clothes in the laundry machine, you may be able to wash it out without too much fuss. Unfortunately, the stain may have set in the amount of time it took your child to get home, or it may have happened hours before you knew it existed. If that’s the case, you have a few options depending on the supplies you have access to:
- Rubbing Alcohol: Take care when using rubbing alcohol to clean any clothing, because there’s the risk that it can make the dye on the fabric bleed. You may want to try mixing it with water – a 50:50 water to alcohol ratio should work – before using straight alcohol on the messy clothes.
- Chlorine Bleach: If you’re dealing with a grass stain on white clothes, a chlorine bleach solution may be able to take care of your dirty needs. Make sure to follow any directions listed on the bleach container to avoid ruining the garment you’re attempting to clean.
- Soaking the Stain: Mixing warm water with detergent and letting the dirty piece of clothing soak for 30 minutes to an hour will do wonders. Once the soaking is done, simply run the garment through a normal wash cycle. If the stain isn’t completely gone after the wash, let it soak for another 15 minutes before trying again. Whatever you do, don’t run it through the dryer until the stain is completely gone.
Make sure to avoid using any alkaline detergents, degreaser, or ammonia on the grass stain – it may set permanently if you do.
