Tips to Keep Your Home Free From Dust

Fall is ready to hit full swing, and that means everyone who struggles with pollen throughout the spring and summer can get ready to take a deep breath and enjoy the allergen-free air. At least, up until they start to struggle with any dust hidden away in the corners of your home. Even though it’s nearly impossible to keep every speck of dust out of your life, you can still dramatically reduce the amount you need to deal with on a daily basis.

  • Take Care of Your Air Filter: If your home has a central heating or cooling system, your filter may be in need of some love and care. Standard air filters last for a few months, but they only catch the bigger particles in the air from damaging the internal systems of your unit. If you struggle with dust, you may want to go out and purchase a high-quality disposable pleated fabric or paper filter. It’s best to replace these filters after about a month, but you can wait up to three months before it becomes a pressing need.
  • Purchase an Air Purifier: Air purifiers are great for keeping the air in one room dust-free, so you may want to purchase one for each room you spend a lot of time in, like your bedroom, the TV room, and maybe even your home office.
  • Break Out the Vacuum Cleaner: Vacuums equipped with high-efficiency particulate air, or HEPA filters, work best to clear your house of dust. Try to vacuum your home twice a week, but if you don’t have the time to hit the whole house, focus on areas with high traffic and carpets. The more frequently you vacuum, the fewer chances dust has to accumulate under your furniture and long the walls.
  • Sweep and Mop Your Heart Out: Whether or not you regularly vacuum your home, sweeping doorways, hallways, and your kitchen floors every couple of days will go a long way to keeping those areas dust-free. Mopping up after you dust areas will help keep everything even cleaner.
  • Switch to Microfiber Cloths: Don’t just grab any old rag to help you dust – microfiber cloths are specifically designed to trap dust, rather than just move it around. Make sure to throw your cloths in the washing machine after you use them, otherwise you’ll just end up trying to clean a dusty surface with a dusty rag. Be careful with fabric softener when cleaning your microfiber cloths, because it can reduce their ability to trap dust particles.
  • Take Your Shoes Off at the Door: Not only is it polite, it can keep your family and guests from tracking unnecessary dust and much throughout your home. While it won’t stop all dust from entering your home, it will dramatically cut down on how much you need to clean up after they leave.
  • Groom Your Pets: Our furry friends are amazing to cuddle with, but if you don’t clean them regularly, they can become dust and dander factories that make your breathing miserable. Make sure to clean them in the bathroom, your laundry room, or even outside to keep the mess to a minimum. Don’t forget about their bedding either, since it can end up becoming dirtier than your pet if you leave it untouched for extended periods of time.
